10 one-day hikes in Rila mountain

The majestic Rila Mountain offers countless opportunities for recreation, adventure, and unique panoramic views from its peaks. It can be soft and hospitable, as well as raw and challenging - depending on the season and the area.

It is suitable for both experienced climbers and the youngest members of the family, just embarking on their mountain path.




In Rila we can choose from countless routes and destinations. Some of them have well-founded markings and sloping paths, while in other places the terrain becomes rocky and more difficult to maneuver. For this purpose we have prepared basic information about some of the most popular routes. What do you need to prepare? What terrain awaits you? Is the route steep or flat?

The seven Rila lakes

4-5 hours

(469 m. displacement from Rila Lakes hut)

  • A combination of a marked path and a rocky slope
  • Sneakers or light hiking boots (according to the season)
  • Light backpack
  • The trekking poles are optional, but will relieve the load when descending
  • Solar protecion or hat
  • Water and food (you can also get from Rila Lakes hut)
Musala peak
6-7 hours
  • Areas with rough terrain and stones
  • We recommend a comfortable pair of hiking boots
  • Trekking poles
  • More voluminous backpack
  • Solar protection or hat
  • Water and food for the road
Malyovitsa peak

5-6 hours

(1009 m. Displacement)

  • Rocky, dirt road, with some sharp climbs
  • Wear trekking poles!
  • Comfortable shoes designed for climbing
  • Normal backpack

  • Danger of avalanches in winter
from Rila Monastery to Ivan Vazov hut
5-6 hours
  • Marked path, followed by a stage on the ridge
  • The route is not recommended in winter
  • Trekking poles for steep sections
  • Water and food
  • Maybe without a backpack
Beli Iskar Eco-trail

3 hours

(4.75 km)

  • Pleasant and easy walk
  • Suitable for families with children
  • Sneakers / light shoes
  • Route in the forest - shady
  • Food and water for a picnic (the atmosphere is worth it)
Semkovo - Redzhepishko lake

4-5 hours

(808 m displacement)

  • Partially marked road
  • Trekking poles for climbing (medium difficulty)
  • Comfortable shoes for rough terrain (according to the season)
Zeleni Preslap locality - Skakavitsa
3 hours
  • Path of moderate difficulty
  • Suitable for children and families
  • Opportunity for recreation at Skakavitsa hut (the oldest in Bulgaria)
  • Magnificent view of the waterfall
  • Wooded area and shady road
Rila Monastery - Fish Lakes

2 days

(1641 m. displacement)

Rila Lakes hut - Kabul peak

Eco-trail Cross

  • Extremely easy and pleasant walk
  • Suitable for families with children
