Walk to the Fish Lakes hut in Rila

In the summer months, many of us prefer the sea and the sand for rest and relaxation. But in the summer the mountain offers us vast beautiful and green landscapes, coolness, a break from the hectic city rhythm and many challenges on its steep terrains and peaks.

Our Extreme Sport`s team decided to walk around Rila in early July. We planned a one-day hike to Yosifitsa peak / 2696 m. / On a sunny Sunday. And together with our friends from Trekking.bg we escaped from Sofia for a day.

We all gathered in the early Sunday morning at the Russian Monument and set off with our own transport to Rila. After a few hours we reached Kirilova Polyana / about 7 km. after Rila Monastery /, where we left the cars. That's where our transition to the top began. Although in the summer we were all prepared with appropriate shoes for the season, equipment and loaded backpacks with the necessary for a day in the mountains. From Kirilova Polyana we took a dirt road by car in the direction of Ribni Ezera hut / 2230 m. /. After the eight-kilometer distance we reached the building of the "Water". Slowly and slowly with the children after a few hours we reached the hut. It is located between two of the large mountain lakes - Fish Lakes / upper and lower /. An interesting fact is that Ribni Ezera hut is part of the international walking route E-4. Reach the hut, we had a good rest. In our backpacks we had prepared sandwiches, sweets and thermoses with tea. We took off our hiking boots to rest our feet and looked at the beautiful views around us. After a good rest we went to the cars on another road - through the Stinking Lake. It is the largest in area and depth of the high mountain lakes in Bulgaria.

It is located between the peaks Rilets and Kyoravitsa. The water from the Stinking Lake is used to regulate the water in the Rila Cascade. The group and I rested on the lake despite the swarms of mosquitoes, took pictures and continued down. The trail passes through squats and is not maintained. Every time we are convinced that even in summer it is very important to choose your equipment - clothes and shoes. As well as be sure to bring with you in the backpack extra light and comfortable clothes to change. In such a transition, it is appropriate to bring gaiters with us as well. We reached Ribni Ezera hut, passed Vodnoto and returned to the starting point of our walking route - Kirilova Polyana. Although already quite tired, everyone had put a happy smile on their face from the pleasant Sunday in the heart of Rila. We got in the cars and back to the capital.

If you decide to go for a walk in the mountains, but you are not sure how to choose the clothes, shoes and the equipment you need, we at Extreme Sports are always there to advise and help you. We will offer you suitable clothes and shoes for the season, backpacks and equipment. And we can always share a mutually valuable experience for routes and terrain in our beautiful mountains.

See you soon!
